Parag Khanna, global strategist and President Obama’s foreign affairs advisor, explains the failure of the global system and the transition to a new but completely chaotic one. Parag describes how the power to change the world will shift to us, the ordinary people. For those of us who are not afraid of big chaos he tells about the exciting transition full of innovation, creativity and opportunities: ‘For me, this new chaotic global system is liberating. I am looking forward to all the new ways of self-organisation. Yes, we are all thrown back on ourselves: we have to become our own global strategist and find out what we want to do. Go and build your own future, and by doing that you will realize that in the process you are also contributing to the future of many others. You are not alone.’ Watch the abridged version of the interview with Parag Khanna here.
Parag’s message for young people:
You have to immediately start building your future, whatever that is for you. By doing so you will realize that you’re building it for others, too. People are no longer islands. So the community, the collective of people with which you cooperate is absolutely crucial to building that positive change. In a way, that’s also my message to young people who are struggling today: you’re not alone. Everyone else is like you and you have to form new kinds of units, becoming effective agents. Whether you’re providing welfare, whether you’re starting a company, whether you’re teaching yourselves new skills, do it in groups and you have a better chance of creating a better future for yourself than if you were alone.
